Term | Definition |

Introductory Rites | the part of mass that unites us as a community, includes the Procession/Opening Song, Greeting, Penitential Rite (forgiveness,) Gloria, Opening Prayer. |
Liturgy of the Word | the part of mass when we listen and respond to God's word,we profess our faith and pray for all people in need.Includes the First Reading, Responsorial Psalm, Second Reading, Gospel Acclamation, Gospel, Homily, Profession of Faith, Prayer of the Faithful |
Liturgy of the Eucharist | the part of mass in which the death and resurrection of christ are made present. There are three parts-Preparaiton of Gifts, Eucharistic Prayer and the Communion Rite. |
Consecration | the part of the Eucharistic Prayer in which the bread and wine are made body and blood of christ |
Concluding Rites | the last part of the mass, important because we are blessed and sent forth to be Christ's servants. Includes the Greeting, Blessing, Dismissal and Closing Song. |
Greeting | the priest offers the final prayer. His words serve as a farewell promise that Jesus will be with us all. |
Blessing | the priest blesses us in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. we make the sign of the cross as he blesses us. |
Dismissal | the deacon or priest sends us out to announce the Gospel of the Lord |
Closing Song | The priest and deacon kiss the altar. They , along with others serving at the mass, bow to the altar and process as we sing. |
Communion Rite | the third part of the Liturgy of the Eucharist.We pray aloud of sing the Lord's prayer, we offer one another a sign of peace. |
First Reading | usually from the Old Testament. We hear of God's love and mercy for his people before the time of Christ. |
Responsorial Psalm | After reflecting in silence as God's word enters our hearts, we thank God for the Words just heard. |
Second Reading | This reading is usually from the New Testament letters, the Acts of the Apostles or the Book of Revelation. We hear about the first disciples, the teachings of the Apostles and the beginning of the Church. |
Gospel Acclamation | we stand to sing the alleluia or other words of praise. This shows we are ready to hear the Good News of Christ. |
Gospel | This reading is always from the Gospel of Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. Proclaimed by the deacon or priest, this reading is about the mission and ministry of Jesus. |
Homily | the priest or deacon talks to us about the readings. His words helps us understand what God's Word means to us today. We learn what it means to believe and be members of the Church. We grow close to God and one another. |
Profession of Faith | the whole assembly prays together the Nicene Creed or the Apostles' Creed. We are stating aloud what we believe as members of the Church. |
Prayer of the Faithful | We pray for the needs of all God's people |
Preparation of the Gifts | the altar is prepared by the deacon and the altar servers. We offer gifts. These gifts include the bread and wine and the collection for the Church and for those in need. |
Eucharistic Prayer | most important prayer of the Church, greatest prayer of praise&thanksgiving.joins us to Christ & to one another. Calls on Holy Spirit to bless bread & wine.recalls jesus' words&actions at Last Supper. Recalls Jesus' suffering,death,resurrection&ascension. |
**Eucharist | the sacrament by which Jesus truly becomes present to us. We receive Jesus Christ in Holy Communion. it's a meal, sacrifice and a memorial.The only sacrament of Christian Initiation we receive again and again. |
Mass | Another name for the celebration of the Eucharist |
