Term | Definition |

Traditional Poetry | poetry that rhymes |
Free Verse Poetry | poetry without rhyme or rhythm |
Rhythm | musical quality created by a pattern of beats or stresses |
Rhyme | the occurrence of similar or identical sounds at the end of two or more words |
Repetition | word, line, or stanza repeated throughout a poem |
Alliteration | repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words |
Assonance | repetition of vowel sounds within words |
Onomatopoeia | words that say their sounds |
Simile | a figure of speech - a comparison using the words, "like" or "as" |
Metaphor | a comparison of two things, saying something IS something else |
Personification | giving human qualities to something that isn't human |
Narrative Poem | a poem that tells a story |
Stanzas | a group of two or more lines that form a unit in a poem - verse |
Style | how something is said |
Word Choice | the author's choice of words that make the writing sound formal, informal, serious, or humorous |
Imagery | words that appeal to the senses |
Tone | a writer's attitude about a subject |
Mood | the feeling or atmosphere that the writer creates for the reader |
Irony | a contrast between expectation and reality |
Author's Purpose | identified by the title and choice of words and details |
Historical and Cultural Context | traditions, social problems, and values that may influence a writer's work |
Inference | a logical guess based on clues |
Hyperbole | a figure of speech in which the truth is exaggerated |
Characterization | the way the writer develops a character by describing what the character looks like, thinks, says and does |
Text Features | present important ideas and eliminate the need to read every single word (bullets, sidebars, etc.) |
Main Idea | the most important idea of a topic or what the reading is about |
Supporting Details | made up of facts, examples that elaborate on the main idea |
Fact | something that can be proven true |
Opinion | a person's feelings about something |
