Food web | Complex interactions of food chains that interact in an ecosystem |
Predator | Organism that captures and feeds on another organism |
Prey | Organism that is captured and fed upon by another organism |
Photosynthesis | Process by which organisms use light energy to make food energy |
Producer | An organism that makes its own food from the energy of the sun |
Consumer | An organism that relies on other living things for its food |
Decomposer | An organism that breaks down dead and decaying matter |
Herbivore | An animal that eats only plant material |
Omnivore | An animal that eats both plants and animals |
Carnivore | An animal that eats only other animals |
Food chain | A simple model that shows a direct line of feeding relationships in an ecosystem |
Symbiosis | Any close relationship between species |
Mutualism | A symbiotic relationship in which both species benefit |
Commensalism | A symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits and the other is not affected |
Parasitism | A symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits and the other is harmed |
Niche | An organism's role in its environment |
community | all the populations of different species that live in an ecosystem |
habitat | place where an organism lives and that provides the types of food, shelter, moisture, and temperature needed for survival |
ecology | the study of the interactions that take place among organisms and their environment |
limiting factor | anything that can restrict the size of a population, including living and nonliving features of an ecosystem, such as predators or drought |
biosphere | the part of Earth that supports life |
ecosystem | all the organisms living in an area, as well as the non-living parts of the environment |
population | made up of all the organisms of the same species that live in an area at the same time |
competition | occurs when two or more organism seek the same resources at the same time |
carrying capacity | the maximum number of individuals of one species that an ecosystem can support over time |
Biome | large area with distinct climate, plant and animal life |
