adverb | a word that modifies a noun examples: green, happy, strong, thin |
alliteration | repetition of the same beginning several words in sequence. example: veni, vidi, vici |
anagram | a word that is formed when letters of a word or phrase are rearranged example: Minnesota is an anagram for nominates |
article | small set of words or affixes (an, a, and the) |
conjunction | a word the joins together sentences, clauses, or phrases. Two types are: coordinating conjunction = and/or subordinating conjunction = although/because |
consonance | recurrence or repetition of consonants |
diaeresis | two dots places side by side over a vowel, indicating the vowel is considered a separate vowel. |
hyperbole | exaggeration for emphasis on something |
intransitive verb | a verb that does not act on an object example: sleep is intransitive |
onomatopoeia | use of words to imitate natural sounds; accommodation of sound to sense. Examples: hiss, whack, hum, cough, scratch |
oxymoron | apparent paradox achieved by the juxtaposition of words that seem to contradict on another. example: jumbo shrimp, random order |
palindrome | a word spelled the same forward as backward. Examples: radar, and Kayak |
paradox | assertion seemingly opposed to common sense but may have some truth to it |
portmanteau | a word created by blending two words together to form a new word that is related to both of the original words. example: brunch = breakfast + lunch |
preposition | a word the combines with a noun, pronoun, or noun modifying a part of the sentence. examples: after, at, before, by, for, with |
pronoun | a word that is used to substitute for a noun, and refers to persons or things examples: I, you, he, she, it, they, we, me, him, her, us, them |
superlative | grammatical comparison denoted by an -est ending. examples: best, worst, fastest, smartest |
tautology | repetition of an idea in a different word, phrase, or sentence. example: "cease and desist that activity" |
transitive verb | it is object oriented examples: see, buy (I saw my friend when I bought a bagel) |
