Common Core vocabulary words from the 9th grade AIS Nonfiction unit

Analysis | a close examination of a text, including what the text states explicitly and what is implied |
Inferences | conclusions reached from evidence and reasoning |
Central Idea | the main point the author wants to explain or prove; the thesis |
Summarize | to restate the main ideas and important details of a text in your own words |
Cause-and-Effect | a text structure used to explain how and why one event or idea led to or influenced another |
Chronological Order | the arrangement of events or ideas in the order in which they actually occurred over a period of time |
Comparison-and-Contrast | a text structure used to explain how events or ideas are alike and different |
Logical Order | an order or sequence that makes sense and is easy for readers to follow |
Connotations | the positive, negative, or neutral feelings associated with a word |
Figurative Language | writing or speech that is not meant to be taken literally |
Technical Terms | words that have a specialized meaning in a particular career or field of study |
Tone | the writer’s attitude toward his or her audience and subject |
Claim | a supporting fact or argument in a persuasive text; OR a belief of position on a topic that the author asks readers to accept |
Text Features | titles, headings, or subheadings that highlight and identify key ideas in a text |
Text Structures | ways of organizing textual support in sentences and paragraphs |
Author's Point of View | the author’s beliefs, attitudes, and experiences relating to a subject |
Author's Purpose | the author’s main reason for writing a text |
Rhetoric | verbal techniques that advance a point of view by creating emphasis and emotional appeal |
Medium | a particular means or format of communication, such as text, audio, video, or multimedia |
Factual Evidence | statements that can be proven to be true |
Fallacious Reasoning | false or faulty logic |
Logical Appeal | using facts and reasons to persuade an audience |
Emotional Appeal | using words with strong positive or negative connotations |
Theme | central idea or message of a text |
Complexity | the degree to which a text is difficult to understand and analyze |
Comprehend | to understand the meaning and importance of something |
