Question | Answer |
---|---|
Arterial blood gases (ABG) | Measures the acidity (PH) and the levels of oxygen & carbon dioxide in the blood. Used to check how will your lungs are able to move oxygen into the blood & remove carbon dioxide from the blood. |
Cardiac Catheterization | measures blood flow to the heart & test how well the heart is pumping. Can measure blood pressure w/ in the heart & how much oxygen is in the blood. |
Creatine Kinase (CK) | is an enzyme (a type of protein) found in muscle and brain. Normally, very little CK is found circulating in the blood. Elevated levels indicate damage to either muscle or brain; possibly from a myocardial infarction (heart attack)muscle disease, or strok |
Echocardiography | takes moving picture of the heart w/ sounds waves done to find out if there are any problems w/ the heart or how its working. |
Electrocardiogram (ECG, EKG) | records the electrical activity of the heart. Used to measure the rate & regularity of beats as well as the size & position of the chambers presence of any damages & effects of drugs or devices used to regulate the heart. |
Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) | A non-specific measure of inflammation, useful for diagnosing diseases. |
Holter Monitor | a continuous recording of heart rhythm during normal activity usually worn for 24 hours to obtain recording of a complete day. |
International Normalized Ratio (INR) | Measures the time it takes for blood to clot & compares it to an average.(coumadin) |
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) | A non-invasive way to take pictures of the body. |
Partial Thomboplastin Time (PTT) | A blood test that looks at how long it takes for blood to clot. It can help tell if you have bleeding/clotting problems. Ordered when someone has unexplained bleeding/clotting.(heparin) |
Pericardiocentesis | Procedure that uses a needle to remove fluid from the pericardial sac, the tissue that surrounds the heart. Done to remove & examine fluid that is pressing on the heart usually done to evaluate cause of a chronic or recurrent pericardial effusion. |
Prothrombin Time (PT) | Evaluates the ability of blood to clot properly can be used to help diagnosis bleeding.(coumadin) |
