inference an educated guess, a conclusion that makes sense
instuctional manuals a paper book that explains how to operate something or put something together
KWL chart a chart with three sections: what I Know, what I Want to know, and what I Learned
main idea the most important point in passage
newspapers informational texts the present fact about current events
objective writing a passage that sticks to the facts and doesn't show the writers feelings
outlining use bullets to write the main details in a passage
predictions guessing what will happen next based on what has already happened
propaganda an organized attempt to influence a big crowd of people to believe a certain idea
purposes of texts text is written for certain reasons, inform, persuade, entertain, or express feelings
reading rate the speed at which you read a text
retelling a reading strategy that helps you remember certain events from a story
signs brief information texts usually off to the side in a textbook
sterotyping saying that ALL people of a certain group are the same
subjective writing that reveals a writer's personal opinion
summarizing stating just the main ideas and shortening them into a few sentences

fable a brief story that teaches a moral
ficiton piece of writing that is made up and not true
figure of speech a word or phrase that describes something but is not literally true
flashback something that happens to make you think of an event that happened in the past
folk tale a story with no known author that was passed on through generations through word of mouth
foreshadowing the use of clues to suggest event that will happen later in a story plot
free verse poetry with no regular rhyme or scheme
imagery language that appeals to the senses
irony a contrast between expectation and reality
metamorphosis a change from one form to another
metaphor a comparison between two unlike things in which one thing is said to be another thing.
mood a emotion created by a work of literature
motivation something that you want but can only get by doing somehting
myth a story that explains some problem and typically involves gods
nonfiction a true story
novel a fictional story that is most likely over one hundred pages long
onomatopoeia the use of words whose sounds echo their sense ( buzz )
personification where a nonhuman or nonliving thing has the quality of talking
plot the series of related events that make up a story
setting the time and place where most of the events take place in a story
short story a fictional narrative that is about twenty pages long
simile a comparison between two unlike things ( as busy as a bee )
speaker the voice talking in a poem
stanza a line in a poem
suspense the anxiety you feel about what will happen next
symbol a person, place, thing. or event that has it's own meaning beyond itself
tall tale an exaggerated tale that is very far-fetched
theme the truth about life revealed in a book
tone the attitude that a writer takes toward the audience, subject, or character
