cause | a cause is something that makes something happen |
effect | result of a cause |
compare | when you look for similarities |
contrast | when you look for differences |
chronological order | the result of a cause |
conclusion | a general summing up of text |
connotation | a feeling that a word invokes |
denotation | the strict dictionary definiton |
context clues | hints that an author gives incase you don't know a word |
fact | a statement that can be proved true |
opinion | a personal belief or feeling on somehting |
fallacious reasoning | false reasoning |
generalization | a broad statement that covers several events |
graphic features | design elements in text such as maps, graphs, etc. |
images | descriptive writing words used to create mental images |
inference | an educated guess, a conclusion that makes sense |
instuctional manuals | a paper book that explains how to operate something or put something together |
KWL chart | a chart with three sections: what I Know, what I Want to know, and what I Learned |
main idea | the most important point in passage |
newspapers | informational texts the present fact about current events |
objective writing | a passage that sticks to the facts and doesn't show the writers feelings |
outlining | use bullets to write the main details in a passage |
predictions | guessing what will happen next based on what has already happened |
propaganda | an organized attempt to influence a big crowd of people to believe a certain idea |
purposes of texts | text is written for certain reasons, inform, persuade, entertain, or express feelings |
reading rate | the speed at which you read a text |
retelling | a reading strategy that helps you remember certain events from a story |
signs | brief information texts usually off to the side in a textbook |
sterotyping | saying that ALL people of a certain group are the same |
subjective | writing that reveals a writer's personal opinion |
summarizing | stating just the main ideas and shortening them into a few sentences |
text structures | ways in which writers structure informational texts, cause and effect, chronological order & compare and contrast |
textbooks | informational texts to help students learn |
writer's perspective | the way a writer looks at things |
alliteration | repetition of the same consonant sounds ( she sells sea shells by the sea shore ) |
allusion | reference to a statement, person, place, event, history etc. |
atmosphere | overall mood of a work of literature |
autobiography | the story of a person written or told by the person |
biography | the story of a person written or told by a different person |
character | a person or animal who takes part in the action in a story |
conflict | a struggle between characters in a story |
description | more detailed words to make the reader feel what is going on |
dialect | a way of speaking, a language |
dialogue | a conversation between two people |
drama | a story written to be acted in front of an audience, a play |
essay | a short piece of writing that is about a single subject |
fable | a brief story that teaches a moral |
ficiton | piece of writing that is made up and not true |
figure of speech | a word or phrase that describes something but is not literally true |
flashback | something that happens to make you think of an event that happened in the past |
folk tale | a story with no known author that was passed on through generations through word of mouth |
foreshadowing | the use of clues to suggest event that will happen later in a story plot |
free verse | poetry with no regular rhyme or scheme |
imagery | language that appeals to the senses |
irony | a contrast between expectation and reality |
metamorphosis | a change from one form to another |
metaphor | a comparison between two unlike things in which one thing is said to be another thing. |
mood | a emotion created by a work of literature |
motivation | something that you want but can only get by doing somehting |
myth | a story that explains some problem and typically involves gods |
nonfiction | a true story |
novel | a fictional story that is most likely over one hundred pages long |
onomatopoeia | the use of words whose sounds echo their sense ( buzz ) |
personification | where a nonhuman or nonliving thing has the quality of talking |
plot | the series of related events that make up a story |
setting | the time and place where most of the events take place in a story |
short story | a fictional narrative that is about twenty pages long |
simile | a comparison between two unlike things ( as busy as a bee ) |
speaker | the voice talking in a poem |
stanza | a line in a poem |
suspense | the anxiety you feel about what will happen next |
symbol | a person, place, thing. or event that has it's own meaning beyond itself |
tall tale | an exaggerated tale that is very far-fetched |
theme | the truth about life revealed in a book |
tone | the attitude that a writer takes toward the audience, subject, or character |
