Academic terms from the Fiction/Nonfiction unit

Fiction Any literary work portraying imaginary characters and/or events
Nonfiction A factual account; literature or cinema that is not made up
Character A person in or personality of a story
Plot The series of events in a story
Setting The time, place, and environment of a story
Narrator The character or speaker telling a story
First Person A narrator in the story telling it from his or her perspective
Third Person Limited An outside narrator that has access to the thought and feelings of only one character in the story
Omniscient An all-knowing narrator; can jump from perspective to perspective to give the reader a more thorough knowledge of the story
Alternating Perspective Point of view where the story is told from several points of view, changing perspectives throughout the story
Point of View Perspective of the story; the perspective from which the reader hears the story
Theme General message or lesson in a fictional story; recurring trend or idea
Historical context The real-life historical events and trends that affect a literary work
Narrative A story. including events and a point of view
Author's Purpose The writer's main reason for writing a story; could be to inform, to persuade, to entertain, or to explain
Central Idea The main idea or message of a nonfiction piece
