Salinity The amount of salt in the ocean.
Phytoplankton Plant-like plankton carry out most of the photosynthesis on Earth.

Waves, tides and currents Three basic motions of the ocean.

Continental Shelf The relatively shallow part of the ocean.
Surface Most ocean life lives at this level of the ocean.
Wave The up and down motion of the ocean.
Wind This force of nature causes most waves.
Rogue Wave An unusually large wave, higher than the waves around it.
Tsunamis These large, destructive waves are caused by earthquakes and volcanoes.
Current A stream of water that flows like a river through the ocean.
Rip Current A powerful current that flows away from the beach, and is dangerous to swimmers.
Shoreline Current Currents that run along the coast.
Deep Ocean Currents Differences in water temperature can cause these types of currents.
Tides The repeated rise and fall of the ocean's level.
Moon These celestial body causes the rise and fall of oceans.
jetty A wall-like structure made of rocks and other blocking materials to prevent erosion.
Abyssal Plain The name of the flat, deep water ocean floor.
Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus The acronym for SCUBA.
Sonar The use of sound waves to map the ocean's features and floor.
The area around the edge of continents, like a gentle slope. Continental Shelf
islands Mountains or volcanoes that rise through the ocean's surface.
density The differences in this means that some water floats and some water sinks.
