Poetry

8 types of poetry and 16 literary elements

TermDefinition
Meter a poem’s rhythmical pattern, which is determined by the number of stresses, or beats, in each line.
Alliteration repeated use of the same letter or sound in words that are close together.
Irony a contrast between expectation and reality. It is often sarcastic or obviously contradictory.
Simile A comparison of 2 things, using the words “like” or “as”
Metaphor a comparison of 2 things, without using “like” or “as.”
Personification when the writer gives human qualities to an inanimate object.
Onomatopoeia a word that sounds like the word it’s describing.
Tone a writer’s attitude toward the audience and the subject, which is shown by the words and rhythm of the writing.
Hyperbole extreme exaggeration
Stanza a grouped set of lines in a poem
Rhyme correspondence of sound between words or the endings of words, especially when these are used at the ends of lines of poetry
Rhyme scheme a regular pattern of rhyming words in a poem
Idiom phrase that has different literal and figurative meanings
Symbolism a character, object, or action that actually means something else.
Imagery an author’s use of vivid, descriptive language to create a mental image for the reader, to ‘paint a picture.’
Repetition the simple repeating of a word or sound in a sentence, paragraph or poem.
Limerick A humorous, rhyming, 5 line poem with a specific meter and rhyme scheme (A, A, B, B, A).
Haiku A 3 line Japanese verse form. The first and third lines each have 5 syllables, the second line has 7 syllables.
Diamante A poem of 7 lines, in the shape of a diamond. It either compares 2 synonyms or contrasts 2 antonyms.
Sonnet A 14-line poem written in iambic pentameter with a specific rhyme scheme.
Free verse poetry not written in a regular, rhythmical pattern, or meter.poet is free to write lines of any length and meter.
Lyric poem A highly musical verse that expresses the observations and feelings of a single speaker.
Narrative poem a story told in verse. It may have all of the elements of short stories, including characters, conflict and plot.
Concrete poem A poem with a shape that relates to its subject or topic
