Understanding Quality Specimen Results

TermDefinition
Contaminate To introduce viruses, bacterium or parasites which could cause infection or adulterated specimens and false test relsults,
Hemoconcentration An increase in concentration of red blood corpuscles, caused by a decrease in the volume plasma. Can alter lab results.
Hemolysis The disintegration of red blood corpuscles and the dissemination of hemoglobin in the surrounding fluid; fluid turns pink to red because hemoglobin is released from the cells
Nonvenous Reaction A blood reaction to injury which happens outside the vein.
Venous Reaction An event that directly affects the vein itself.
Wicking In phlebotomy, the flow of blood which occurs when a dry filter paper touches a wet drop of blood.
