Term | Definition |

life cycle | The stages an organism, or living thing, goes through during its life. |
germinate | When a seed breaks open and a small plant grows out of it. |
flower | The part of some plants that enables them to reproduce. |
reproduce | Make more plants (or animals) that are similar to themselves. |
cone | Plants that do not have flowers have these instead. These plants are called conifers. |
pollen | A powder-like material involved in plant reproduction. |
pollination | Happens when pollen is moved from the male plant part to the female plant part. |
spore | Reproductive structures that can grow into a new plant. |
metamorphosis | A major change in the body form of an animal during its life cycle. |
tadpole | An immature frog that must live in water. |
larva | The stage between egg and pupa in complete metamorphosis of insects. |
pupa | The stage of complete metamorphosis in which an insect changes to an adult. |
adaptation | Trait or characteristic that helps an organism survive. |
camouflage | The coloring, marking, or other physical appearance of an organism that helps it blend in with its surrounds. |
mimicry | An adaptation in which a harmless animal looks like an animal that is poisonous or tastes bad, so that predators avoid it. |
behavior | The way that an organism usually acts in a certain situation. |
instinct | An inherited behavior of an animal that helps it meet its needs. |
learned behavior | A behavior that an animal doesn't begin life with but develops as a result of experience or by observing other animals. |
migrate | To travel from one place to another and back again. |
hibernate | To go into a deep sleep-like state for winter |
complete metamorphosis | egg, larva, pupa, adult |
incomplete metamorphosis | egg, nymph, adult |
