BMMS Unit 4 Foundations of Narrative
Term | Definition |

narrative | a story; a written or spoken account of events |
setting | The time and place in which an event occurs; surroundings |
character | A person (actor) in a story, play, novel, movie, etc. |
protagonist | The leading, or principal character; usually the “good” character or hero. |
antagonist | The adversary or opponent of the main character or protagonist; usually the “bad” character or villain. |
plot | The main events (storyline) of a play, story, movie, etc. |
climax | The most intense, exciting, or important part of a story, movie, novel, etc. |
conflict | A struggle or a problem (often between two characters). |
resolution | The action or event which solves the problem or conflict. |
dialogue | A conversation between characters in a narrative; words that are intended to be spoken aloud in a script. |
theme | The central idea, moral, or statement that the author is trying to make to the reader. |
central idea | The main thought or principal theme in a work of literature; sometimes the central idea is implied rather than stated. |
inference | Using facts, observations, and logic or reasoning to come to an assumption or conclusion. |
ordeal | a painful horrific experience |
resurrection | the action of rising from the dead |
atonement | a reparation of a wrong or injury; to make amends |
threshold | a place or point of beginning |
mentor | a wise and trusted counselor or teacher |
refusal | an act or instance of refusal; resistance |
exposition | an explanation of an idea or theory |
