What is the anti-inflammatory action? | Corticosteroids inhibits prostaglandin synthesis, prevents inflammation. |
What is the immunosuppressant action? | Interferes with immune & allergic response, used to delay rejection with transplants, also for acute allergic/anaphylactic reactions. |
What are some adverse actions of corticosteroids? | They break down protein within muscle causing delayed wound healing. Increase glucose levels leading to hyperglycemia. Redistributes adipose tissue to central areas of the body. |
What are the side effects/adverse reactions of corticosteroids? | Most effects are due to drugs action on multiple systems. Hypertension, muscle wasting/pain, N/V, GI bleeding, hyperglycemia, mood swings, impaired wound healing, electrolyte imbalance, fluid retention. |
What are some patient teachings related to corticosteroids? | Take with food to minimize GI distress, discontinue gradually to prevent adrenal insufficiency, be alert for drug to drug reactions. |
