N112 - Corticosteroids for final

QuestionAnswer
What are the uses of corticosteroids? Corticosteroids are used as anti-inflammatory, replacement therapy, immunosuppresant and anaphylaxis.
What is the anti-inflammatory action? Corticosteroids inhibits prostaglandin synthesis, prevents inflammation.
What is the immunosuppressant action? Interferes with immune & allergic response, used to delay rejection with transplants, also for acute allergic/anaphylactic reactions.
What are some adverse actions of corticosteroids? They break down protein within muscle causing delayed wound healing. Increase glucose levels leading to hyperglycemia. Redistributes adipose tissue to central areas of the body.
What are the side effects/adverse reactions of corticosteroids? Most effects are due to drugs action on multiple systems. Hypertension, muscle wasting/pain, N/V, GI bleeding, hyperglycemia, mood swings, impaired wound healing, electrolyte imbalance, fluid retention.
What are some patient teachings related to corticosteroids? Take with food to minimize GI distress, discontinue gradually to prevent adrenal insufficiency, be alert for drug to drug reactions.
