Northwest Passage

Why did European explorers search for a Northwest Passage? | The European explorers wanted a shortcut to Asia, so they didn't have to sail around South America. They wanted a water route through North America. |
Who was John Cabot? | An Italian explorer who thought he could reach Asia by sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. The king of England paid for his voyage. He reached Canada and thought it was Asia. |
Who was Verrazano? | An Italian sea captain sent by France to look for a Northwest Passage. |
Who was Cartier? | He continued France's search for a water route to Asia. Sailed up the St. Lawrence River in Canada. |
Who was Champlain? | Founded a fur-trading post on the St. Lawrence River and called it Quebec. |
What did John Cabot find during his exploration of Canada? | Rich fishing area off the coast of Canada. |
Who was Henry Hudson? | An English captain who sailed for a Dutch trading company. Sailed up the Hudson river in present-day New York. |
What did Henry Hudson find on his second voyage? | He sailed for England and a found a huge bay in present-day Canada. The bay became known as Hudson Bay. |
What did Francis Drake do? | He was an English sea captain who attacked many Spanish ships and gave the gold and silver to Queen Elizabeth of England. |
Why was King Philip of Spain angry at England? | England was attacking the Spanish ships and taking the gold and silver and they had different religion beliefs. |
Why did the Spanish armada prepare an invasion of England? | Because of religion differences and the English attacks on Spanish ships. |
