The 3 functions of the nervous system are: gather outside info, analyze the info gathered, respond to info according to the bodies specific needs
What makes up nervous system tissues? Neurons
What are the 3 types of neurons? motor neurons, sensory neurons, interneurons
What is an afferent neuron? Sensory neurons because they carry impulses to the CNS and cell bodies
What does CNS mean? Central nervous System
What is an efferent neuron? Motor neurons because they carry impulses to the muscles and organs away from the cell bodies and CNS
What is one major difference in the structure of motor and sensory neurons? Sensory neurons do not have debdrites while motor neurons do
All nerve fibers are wrapped in a sheath, what type has a myelin sheath? The peripheral nervous system
what do Schwann cells do? They create the myelin sheath.
what is a tract? A group of nerve fibers within the CNS
What is the "bridge" that joins the cerebral hemispheres and is considered the largest tract in the brain? the corpus callosum
The space at the end of each synapse is called: Synaptic cleft
A receptor does what? Recieves a stimulation for the nerve
Receptors react to stimuli by initiating what type of response? Chemical-electrical
In the spinal cord, what is the shape of the gray and white matter? H shaped with white on the outside and gray making the core.
What is the formation of gray and white matter in the spinal cord? Opposite of the spinal cord, white matter is the core surrounded by the gray matter.
The largest mass of nervous tissue in the body is the : Brain
What are the major divisions of the brain? The cerebrun, the diencephalon, and the brainstem.
The brainstem is made up of 2 parts called: The midbrain and the hindbrain
The hindbrain consists of: The cerebellum, the pons, the medulla oblongota and the reticular formation
Stroke can be caused by: artherosclerosis, narrowing of the arteries
Progressive degenerative disease of the brain characterized by loss of memory and other cognitive functions: Alzheimer's Disease
Paralysis of the muscles that control expression on one side of the face is? Bell's palsy
