New England Settlements

QuestionAnswer
Pilgrim A person who makes a long journey for religious reasons.
Compact An agreement.
Cape A strip of land that stretches into a body of water.
What caused the Puritans to move to North America? The Puritans disagreed with the Church of England. The wanted to make themselves and their church pure.
Mayflower Compact? An agreement by the Pilgrims to make and obey laws.
Why were the Puritans better prepared for settlement than the pilgrims? Among the Puritans were people with many different skills. They sailed in March, so it gave them enough time to plant crops when they arrived and brought 4 ships with supplies.
When did the Pilgrims land in Salem? 1620
Why did the Pilgrims leave the Netherlands for North America? They left because they wanted to live apart from people of other beliefs and they were bothered that their children were learning Dutch customs
Squanto An American Indian who had been to Europe and spoke English.
What did Squanto do? He introduced the Pilgrims to Massasoit who was leader of the Wampanoag.
Who and what did William Bradford do? He was governor of Pymouth, and he and Massasoit agreed to live in peace.
How did Squanto help the Pilgrims? He taught them how to plant crops, like corn(maize), pumpkins and beans and guided them in hunting and fishing.
Who was John Winthrop? A lawyer who was the first governor of the new Puritan colony.
Who said, "We shall be a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us."? John Winthrop
Where did the Puritans land? Salem, June 1630
What did the Puritans name their settlement? Massachusetts Bay Colony
What did the Pilgrims do at their first harvast? They held a feast to thank God for their first harvest and invited the Wampanoags. We now call this Thanksgiving.
The Mayflower A pilgrim ship. Crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1620 and landed in Plymouth, Massachusettes.
