Term | Definition |
---|---|
pure substance | a substance made of only one type of particle; cannot be broken down physically |
element | pure substance made of only one kind of atom |
compound | substance made of two or more elements that are chemically combined(bonded) |
atom | smallest particle of an element |
molecule | smallest particle of a compound; made of two or more bonded atoms |
mixture | combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined |
heterogeneous mixture | mixture in which the different materials can be easily distinguished |
colloid | heterogeneous mixture whose particles never settle |
Tyndall Effect | scattering of a light beam as it passes through a colloid |
suspension | heterogeneous mixture -large particles that settle out and separate into layers over time |
homogeneous mixture | mixture that is uniform in composition; components are evenly distributed and not easily distinguished |
solution | another name for homogeneous mixture |
physical property | a characteristic substance that does not involve a chemical change.Ex. melting,/boiling point, solubility, density, color, or hardness |
ductile | term used to describe the physical property of a material that can be pulled out into a long wire |
malleable | term used to describe physical property of a material that can be shaped, hammered, or dented |
chemical property | property of matter that describes a substance's ability to participate in chemical reactions |
physical change | change in a substance that does not change its identity; no chemical reaction occurs |
chemical change | change that occurs in which one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties |
law of conservation of matter | principle that the total amount of matter is constant during any physical or chemical change (matter is neither created of destroyed during these types of changes); the total amount of mass is equal before and after the reaction |
flammability | ability to burn - chemical property |
