White Plains NY Battle in Manhatten, NY,where Washington's troops ran away Oct, 1776
Hessians German mercenaries whose presence greatly angered the Americans.
Charles Lee Originally was Washington's most trusted subordinate officer. He repeatedly disobeyed Washington and was eventually court marshalled.
Battle of Trenton Washinton snuck up on Hessians and captured many of them, after sneaking across an almost frozen river. Dec. 1776
Battle of Princeton Washington outflanked Lord Cornwallis' troops in Jan 1777. This victory followed the Crossing of the Delaware.
General Burgoyne The English general (known as "Gentleman Johnny")who defeated Americans at the battle of Brandywine. Sept. 1777
The battle of Germantown The Americans were attacked through the fog and were routed and defeated.They had been trying to surprise attack the British, but it back-fired. Oct. 1777
General Benedict Arnold The hero of Saratoga, who beat Burgoyne Oct. 1777. He was angry at not getting enough credit (Gen. Gates got it) and eventually betrayed the Americans.
General Horatio Gates The general who got all of Arnold's credit for the battle of Saratoga.
Valley Forge The horrible winter grounds where Washington and his army stayed in the winter of 1777-1778, northwest of Philadelphia, PA
General Henry Clinton He replaced Howe as one of Britain's generals in 1778.
The battle of Monmouth Courthouse The battle which was led by Charles Lee and Lafayette, a french General. Lee retreated without orders from Washington during this battle. Luckily, the Americans still were able to defeat the British when Washington rallied them to couterattack.
Savannah and Augusta The two cities that the British captured in Georgia within 1 month of each other.Savannah in Dec. 1778 and Augusta in Jan. 1779.
The Battle of Camden The battle ended in defeat, and Amer.General Gates was found 40 miles away from the scene on the armies' fastest horse. August 1780
The Battle of Yorktown This was the battle where Washington had cornered Cornwallis, and forced him to surrender. The French fleet guarded exitting by sea, and the American army blocked exitting by land. This signified the end of the American War for Independence.

Trenton, NJ site of the Christmas eve battle, where Wash. crossed the Delaware River and captured the Hessian troops. On 2 Americans died, and many enlisted after hearing of this victory.
Battle of Saratoga's results France recognized the independence of the US in Dec. 1777, and signed a formal treaty of alliance. King Louis XVI was in power.
Marquis de Lafayette Frenchman who came to the US to help us win the revolution.
Thaddeus Kosciusko of Poland Came to the US to help us win the revolution.
Admiral D'Estaing French commander of the fleet who took the fleet off to the West Indies after the attempt to regain Savannah failed in 1779.
Staten Island,NY Washington's unsuccessful raid on the British in 1780. too much frostbite.
General De Kalb German general who Washington sent to try and save Charleston, SC, but it fell in May, 1780
summer of 1780 Washington's top priority is to fortify West Point to prevent the British from cutting off New England from the rest of the colonies.
West Point Benedict Arnold asked for this command with treachery in mind.
Count Rochambeau Frenchman who landed with 6000 troops in July,1780 to help Washington.
John Anderson Name taken by Major General John Andre, the British spy who had secret papers from Arnold in Sept. 1780.
Gen. Nathanael Greene Evacuated almost all of No. Carolina and pursued by Lord Cornwallis in 1781.
