Sir Francis Drake Englishman who attacked Spanish ships and was knighted
Sir Walter Raleigh Englishman His scouts found Roanoke Island. The first group of settlers to England came back after a miserable winter. The second group of settlers disappeared.
Captain John Smith He was English and a strong leader. He made people work, explored the area, and got corn from the Native Americans. He made Jamestown.
Pocahontas She was the daughter of Chief Powhatan. She married John Rolfe. She made relations between the settlers and Native Americans peaceful.
House of Burgesses This first meet in 1619. This was a group of town's representative that made the laws for the colony.
