Academic language - 5th grade

QuestionAnswer
character a person, an animal in a story
climax the point in the story at which conflict is confronted
declarative sentence a sentence that tells something and ends in a period
exclamatory sentence a sentence that expresses strong feeling or surprise and ends in an exclamation mark
homograph a word that is spelled the same as another word, but has different meaning. The words may or may not sound the same.
imperative sentence a sentence that gives a command or makes a request . It usually ends with a period.
Interrogative sentence a sentence that asks a question and ends with a question mark
monitor and clarify to know when you understand or do not understand what you are reading and use strategies to help you
how to text a set of directions telling how to do something
plot the events at the beginning, middle and end of a story, the action in a story
rising action the build-up of problems in a story
resolution the point in the story where the problem is solved
conflict the problem or struggle in a story
context clues the words, phrases, or sentences near an unknown word that give the reader clues to the word's meaning.
