Term | Definition |

Primary industry | when you extract what you want. It involves changing natural resources into primary products |
Secondary industry | Produces finished, usable products |
Tertiary industry | also called the service sector, and provides services to businesses |
Quaternary industry | looks for new ways to cut costs, find new markets, produce new ideas, new production methods, and methods of manufacture |
Natural resources | Useful raw materials from the earth |
Renewable resources | Sources of power that quickly replenish themselves |
Non-renewable resources | Sources of power that can run out |
Global warming | A gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere |
Greenhouse effect | The trapping of the sun's warmth in a planet's lower atmosphere |
Greenhouse gas | A gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation |
Ecological footprint | The metric that allows us to calculate human pressure on the planet and come up with facts |
Conventional energy | Relies on the burning of fossil fuels. This can produce dangerous gases that often end up in the atmosphere |
Alternative energy | Produced by harnessing the world around us and the elements. It does not create much pollution |
