Important Court Cases

Marbury vs Madison 1803. 1st case in which a law passed by congress was declared unconstitutional. Granted court the right to use judicial review.
Dred Scott 1857. Former slave who had lived in free states with his owner. Wanted freedom after owner's death. Denied because they found the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional.
McCullouch v Maryland 1819. State bank could not be taxed.
Brown v Board of Education of Topeka 1954. Considered most important ruling the US Supreme court ever issued on race.
Roe v Wade 1973. Supreme court ruled woman had constitutional right to terminate her pregnancy.
Doe V Bolton Abortion clinics are legal
Plessy v Ferguson 1896. Separate but equal accommodations for blacks and whites on intrastate railroads was constitutional. Provided the legal foundation to justify many other actions by state and local governments to socially separate blacks and whites.
