prime movers muscles that initiate movement
synergists muscles that assist the prime movers by stabilizing the joint
tendon a narrow strip of dense, connective tissue that attaches a muscle to a bone
contractility ability to contract or shorten
elasticity ability to return to the original size and shape after being stretched
extendibility ability to stretch or lengthen
irritability ability to respond to a stimulus
tonus slight tension in muscle, present at all times to allow muscles to act more easily and quickly
abduction away from a part
adduction toward a part of midline
flexion bends a joint
extension straightens a joint
depression lowers a part
elevation lifts a part
eversion turns a part outward
inversion turns a part inward
rotation moves a part around an axis
supination moves the hand so that the palm is up
pronation moves the hand so that the palm is down
