Hoover Struggles with the Great Depression

What was Hoover's disillusioning campaign slogan? "A chicken in every pot and a car in every garage"
Hoover's strategy was to assure the economy was ok even though it wasnt. Why did he do this? He believed that the government could have only a limited roll in helping to solve national problems.
What did Hoover believe was the right thing for the government to do to resolve conflicts? Encourage and facilitate cooperation, not control it.
Whats rugged individualism? People should take care of themselves and their families, not rely on the government to bail them out (Hoover believed this so he didnt hand out money from the government, he didnt want to ruin people's self-respect)
What was Hoover's approach to the Great Depression? He was very cautious, he made small changes that didnt make a difference and frustrated many Americans who were suffering
What is the Boulder Dam? it was the world's tallest dam, paid for later by the electricty it produced. In Colorado it used the water power to create electricity and provide water to city residents. It
How did American's express their anger over the Great Depression? They voted Democrats into the Senate, farmers would use force to keep their farms from being foreclosed, and burn their crops.
As part of Hoover's new activist attitude what industry did he support? Cooperatives, people getting together. He also supported bigger banks loaning money to smaller banks in order to keep them in business
What was the Federal Home Loan Bank Act? It lowered mortgage rates for homeowners and allowed farmers to refinance their farm loans and avoid foreclosure
What was the Reconstruction Finance Corporation? It was a bailout of $2 billion in emergency financing for banks, life insurance companies, railroads and other large businesses
What was the result of the RFC? It was supposed to trickle down to the everyday citizens, but it ended up being too little amount of money too late in time.
What was the Bonus Army? A group of WWI veterans who wanted money since they werent adequately paid for their services in WWI. Rallied for the Patman Bill which was denied
What did Hoover do to the Bonus Army that wanted to speak with him? He sent the army out to flood the area with tear gas which blinded a boy and killed a baby. This made everyone completely hate Hoover for mistreating veterans.
