Term | Definition |

Acceleration | the rate at which velocity changes over time. |
Force | A push or pull. |
Inertia | The resistance of an object to a change in its speed and/or direction. |
Joules | The unit used to measure energy and work. |
Velocity | Speed with direction. |
Work | Force applied over a distance. |
Friction | The force that resists motion between two surfaces that are pressed together. |
Simple Machines | Six machines on which all other mechanical machines are based. |
wheel and axle | A simple machine made of a wheel attached to an axle. |
screw | An inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder or cone to form a spiral. |
pulley | A wheel with a grooved rim and a rope or cable that rides in the groove. |
lever | A bar that rotates around a fixed point called a fulcrum. |
inclined plane | A sloping surface that helps move objects from one level to another level. |
wedge | A movable inclined plane with a thick end and a thin end. Used for cut, split, pierce objects, or hold objects together. |
