ELA Vocabulary Practice

TermDefinition
personification A kind of metaphor that gives objects or abstract ideas human characteristics.
hyperbole Extreme exaggeration used for emphasis, often used for comic effect.
simile A comparison between two unlike things using the work like or as.
metaphor A comparison between two unlike things in which on thing is said to be another.
pun The humorous use of a word or words to suggest another word with the same sound or a different meaning.
irony The use of words to convey a meaning that is opposite of its literal meaning.
setting The location where the story takes place.
theme The main topic and message of the story.
inference The process of arriving at a conclusion based on certain premises.
perspective The author's viewpoint.
claim To choose something you believe in as fact.
anecdote A short account of an event.
alliteration A group of words that begin with the same beginning letter; Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Peppers.
onomatopoeia The imitation of a sound like; bang, pow, zoom.
summarize To write the main idea of a paragraph or story.
interpretation To give your own meaning to someone's written work.
