Therapeutic An action that helps to restore health
Non- Therapeutic An action taken for economic, cosmetic or research purposes
Somatic cell therapy A form of gene therapy that corrects faulty genes
Saviour Siblings Babies conceived using PGD and IVF so their cord blood can be used to treat a seriously sick sibling
Designer Babies Babies whose genetic structure has been structured to ensure particular characteristics e.g. eye colour
PGD Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, screening embryos in IVF treatment to select those that would be a closest match to the sick child
Reproductive cloning Also known as human cloning, this would be the creation of an identical copy of a human.
Therapeutic cloning Also known as stem cell cloning, this would use stem cells from an embryo to create replacement tissue or organs.
Hybrid embryos Embryos created by inserting human genetic material into empty cow's eggs.
