Sensory Fxn: Use a cotton ball to touch teh person's face, have them tell you "now" when they feel it. Divisions of the nerve are opthalmic, maxillary, and mandibular | V:Trigeminal |
Corneal Reflex: remove contact lens and have the person look forward, bring a wisp of cotton from the side and lightly touch the cornea. | V: Trigeminal |
Motor: NOte mobility and facial symmetry as the person responds to these requests: smile, frow, close eyes tightly (against attempt to open them), lift eyebrow, show teeth, and puff cheeks. Then press the cheeks and note that the air is expelled | VII: Facial |
Sensory: only when suspect facial nerve injury. Ask the person to identify taste using a cotton ball on the tongue | VII: Facial |

Motor: depress the tongue with a blade and have them say "ahh", note uvula and soft palate rise in the midline, and tonsillar pillars move medially. NOte gag reflex and smooth voice sounds. | IX and X-Glossopharyngeal and Vagus |
Examine the sternomastoid and trapezius muscles for equal size. Ask the person to push against resistance applied to the side of the chin. Then ask person to shrug shoulders against resistance. | XI: Spinal Accessory |
Inspect eh tongue. Note the forward thrust in the midline as the person protrudes the tongue. Ask the person to say "light, tight, dynamite" and note lingual speech | XII: Hypoglossal |
