analyze | To examine carefully and in detail to determine answers |
author's purpose | The reason an author decides to write about a topic |
compare | Recognize and discuss how things are similar |
contrast | Recognize and discuss how things are different |
persuade | an attempt to convince the reader to adopt an opinion or course of action |
generalization | A general statement, idea, or principle |
tone | Writer’s attitude towards subject, described with an adjective |
foreshadow | clues that suggest events to come and create suspense |
context clues | Using words and sentences around an unfamiliar word or phrase to clarify meaning |
main idea or central idea | primary idea the writer wants the reader to recall |
narrator | the speaker or character telling the story |
characterization | How characters are described and developed throughout a story |
structure | The way a text is organized |
explain | To make plain or clear |
setting | When (time) and where (location) the story takes place |
