Term | Definition |
---|---|
Abstinence | To refrain (not use) from something – alcohol, Drugs |
Analgesics | Painkillers e.g. Paracetamol, heroin |
Dependency | To rely on drugs or alcohol |
Depressants | Anything that decreases brain activity e.g. Alcohol, solvents |
Hallucinogens | These distort people’s perceptions of the world around them e.g. magic mushrooms, LSD |
Illegal drugs | These are banned substances and people can be charged for possession or use of these drugs |
Medically prescribed drugs | Drugs prescribed by a doctor as part of a medical treatment |
Moderation | To use a small amount of something |
Rehabilitate | To help someone to get back to their normal self |
Socially acceptable drugs | Legal drugs that are permitted in society- alcohol or caffeine. These can still be addictive. NOT CANNABIS! |
Stimulants | Anything that increases brain activity e.g. Ecstasy, Speed, Tobacco, Caffeine |
Vulnerable | Someone at risk |
Hard Drugs | Drugs which lead to dependency and cause severe harm to the body |
Drug Abuse | Using drugs in a way which harms the user |
Non-medical use of drugs | Taking drugs for reasons other than medical need |
Soft drugs | Illegal drugs that are not believed by the users to lead to dependency or serious side effects |
Recreational drugs | Drugs taken by people for fun |
