biopsy The removal and examination of tissue, cells, or fluids
buccal Of or relating to the mouth, supplying to the cheek
calculi A concretion of mineral salts around organic material in hollow organs or ducts
cellulitis Subcutaneous inflammation of connective tissue
circumduction Movement of a limb or extremity in a circular motion
coagulate To clot or thicken
crepitus A crackling sound or sensation or grating feeling in the skin or joints
creatinine A basic compund formed from creatine and found in muscle, blood, and urine
cyanosis A bluish or purplish discoloration of the skin due to deficient oxygenation of the blood
cystitis Inflammation of the urinary bladder
debride To cleanse by debridement
dehiscence The parting of the surgical wound
dementia Progressive condition marked by development of multiple cognitive deficits
diaphoresis Profuse perspiration
dysphagia Difficulty swallowing
dysphasia Loss or deficiency in the power to use or understand language
dysuria Difficult or painful urine
ecchymosis The escape of blood into tissues from ruptured blood vessels
embolus Abnormal particle circulating in the blood
epistaxis Nosebleed
enteric Of or relating to affecting the intestines
evisceration The removal or organs, especially from the abdomen
exudate Material composed of serum and WBC's that escape blood vessels or areas of inflammation
erythema Abnormal redness of the skin
fissure A break, slit, or cleft in the tissue
flaccid Not firm or stiff
gait Sequence of foot movements and coordination
gavage Introduction of material into the stomach by a tube
glottis The space between one of the true vocal cords and the arytenoid cartilate on one side of the larynx
hematemesis Vomiting blood
hematuria Blood in the urine
homeostasis The maintenance of relatively stable internal physiological conditions under varying changes
hydrocephalus Increase in the amount of cerebrospinal fluid within the cranial cavity causing enlargement of the skull
hypercapnia The presence of an excess of carbon dioxide in the blood
hypotonicity A cell surrounded by a higher concentration environment than within the cell, resulting in water leaving the cell
hypoxia Deficiency of oxygen in the body tissues
hypoxemia Deficient oxygenation of the blood
ileus Obstruction of the bowel commonly marked by a painful distened abdomen
intracellular Existing, occurring, or functioning within a cell
ischemia Deficient supply of blood to a body part due to obstruction of the inflow of blood
jaundice Yellowish pigmentation of the skin, tissues, and body fluids caused by depostion of bile pigments
kyphosis Outward curvature of the thoracic region of the spinal column resulting in a rounded upper back
lavage The act or action of washing an organ
malaise A general feeling of discomfort or being unwell
melanoma A benign or malignant skin tumor containing dark pigment
metastatic The spread of disease from one organ or body part to another
micturate To urinate
mydriatic Causing or involving dilation of the pupil of the eye
necrosis Death of living tissue
nocturia Urination at night, may be excessive
nosocomial Acquired or occurring in a hospital
orifice An opening through which something may pass
orthopnea Difficulty breathing in the lying position, relieved when changed to an upright position
oliguria Reduced excretion of urine
palliative Form of medical treatment that concentrates on reducing the severity of disease symptoms, to prevent and relieve suffering
pandemic Occurring over a wide geographic area and affecting a high proportion of a population (continent or worldwide)
paracentesis A surgical puncture of a bodily cavity, usually to draw off effusion for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes
paralysis Complete or partial loss of function in motion or sensation of body parts
paraplegia Paralysis of the lower half of the body
parenchyma The essential and distinctive tissues of an organ
paresthesia Sensation of pricking, tingling, or creeping on the skin with no objective cause and usually associated with sensory nerve damage
pathogen A specific causative agent of a disease, i.e. bacteria, virus
perfusion The pumping of fluid through an organ or tissue
petechiae Minute reddish or purplish spots containing blood as a result of hemorrhage
phlebitis Inflammation of a vein
pruritus Localized or generalized itching due to irritation of sensory nerve endings
purulent Containing or consisting of pus
pyrexia Fever
reflux A flowing back or regurgitation
retroperitoneal Situated or occurring behind the peritoneum
sepsis Systemic response to a localized infection
sphincter A muscle surrounding and able to contract or close a bodily opening
stasis State in which the normal flow of a body liquid stops or a state of stability
stenosis Narrowing or constriction of the diameter of a bodily passage
stridor A harsh vibrating sound heard during respiration in case of obstruction of the air passages
stupor Mental condition marked by absence of spontaneous movement, diminshed responsiveness to stimulation and impaired consciousness
syncope Loss of consciousness resulting from insufficient blood flow to the brain
thrombosis Formation or presence of a blood clot within a blood vessel
tortuous Marked by repeated twists, bends, or turns
toxemia Condition of toxic substances in the blood
turgor Normal state of turgidity and tension of living tissue
unconscious Lost consciousness, thought, sensation, and feeling
urosepsis Toxic condition of extravasation of urine into bodily tissues
urticaria Hives
vasoconstriction Narrowing of the lumen of blood vessels
virulence Relative capacity of a pathogen to overcome body defenses and cause disease
viscera An internal organ of the abdomen or thorax
viscosity Property of resistance to flow in a fluid, thickness
