What is Jacksonian Democracy? The idea of spreading political power to all people.
What group of people did Jackson say he represented? The "common man"
Who was allowed to vote for president? Adult white males
What did Jackson do before he was president? He was a general in the army.
What was Jackson's nickname? "Old Hickory"
How did Jackson become a military hero? He won the Battle of New Orleans against the British in the War of 1812.
What is Indian Territory? The land Native Americans were forced to move to, now the state of Oklahoma
What was the Indian Removal Act? The law passed by Congress that forced Native Americans to move west of the Mississippi River.
Why did Jackson want to remove the Indians? He wanted white families to have the land to farm.
What was the Trail of Tears? The forced march of 16,000 Cherokee from their land to Indian Territory. About 4000 died.
Who was Sequoya? A Cherokee who invented a written alphabet for his people.
Who was Osceola? A leader of the Seminole tribe that resisted being moved from their land.
Who was Jackson's Vice-President in his first term? John C. Calhoun
What was the Tariff of Abominations? A high tax placed on manufactured goods. It was hated by the South and favored by the North.
What was the Doctrine of Nullification? A policy that said a state had the right to reject federal laws that it considered unconstitutional.
What were the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions? Declarations by the two states that they would refuse to follow unfair federal laws.
What is secession? When one part of a group withdraws or removes itself from the rest.
Who is Henry Clay? The Great Compromiser. He came up with many solutions that both sides could agree on.
Why did Jackson want to destroy the Bank of the United States? He belived it made the rich richer and hurt the common man.
How many terms did Andrew Jackson serve as president? Two terms, or 8 years.
Why was President Jackson sometimes called "King Andrew?" He was a strong president who took a lot of power for the executive branch.
