Knowing the names and use of many different types of sources to do research.

What are Almanacs? | Resource books that are up to date info on a variety of topics like= weather, population,food grown, accidents that happen, who wrote what books,awards etc.. you name it -its in the almanac. |
What is a Gazetteer? | It's a geography dictionary. It will have maps, terms or vocabulary about land forms. Definitions about anything dealing with land or earth. |
What are Trade books? | Books that are written for the average people to read. It is written in simple terms and covers just one subject/ like the History of Cooking. |
What are Periodicals? | Printed material that comes out everyday, once a week or once a month. Newspapers, magazines are examples |
What are Primary Sources? | They are the original records of the event you are researching. They are eyewitness accounts. Letters, newspapers, maps,diaries, photographs,oral histories are some examples. |
What are Secondary Sources? | Writing and interpretations of other people who were not there at the event. Textbooks, trade books are examples. The information in these may come second or third hand from primary sources. |
