Term | Definition |
---|---|
Force | Push or pull exerted on an object |
Load | A force applied to a body |
Stress | The resistance of a body to a load |
Line of Action | A line parallel to and in line with a force |
Concurrent | Occurs when the line of action of several forces pass through a common point |
Non-concurrent | Occurs when the line of action of several forces do NOT pass through a common point |
Resultant | One force that will produce the same effect on a body as two or more other forces |
Equilibrant | Force equal in magnitude to the resultant but opposite in direction and on the same line of action as the resultant |
Moment | Tendency of a force to cause rotation about a given point or axis |
Couple | Two forces equal in magnitude, but opposite in direction, and acting some distance from each other |
Three Conditions of Equilibrium | 1. The summation of all the horizontal forces acting on the body must equal zero 2. The summation of all the vertical forces acting on the body must equal zero 3. The summation of all the moments acting on the body must equal zero |
Centroid | Center of gravity of an area |
Strain | Deformation or change in size of a body caused by external loads |
Yield Point | Point where a material stretches with no increase in load |
Ultimate Strength | Maximum Yield Stress |
