1.2 Science Vocab

TermDefinition
Scientific Inquiry The ongoing process of discovery in science, the diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and propose explanations based on evidence they gather.
Hypothesis A hypothesis is a possible explanation for a set of observations or answer to a scientific question.
Parameter Any factor that can be measured in an experiment.
Manipulated Variable A variable purposely changed to test a hypothesis.
Responding Variable A factor expected to change in response to the manipulated variable.
Controlled Experiment An experiment where one variable is manipulated at a time.
Qualitative Data Data that can be recorded as notes in a journal.
Quantitative Data Data that consists of measurements.
Communicating The sharing of ideas and experimental findings with others through writing and speaking.
Model A picture, diagram, computer image, or other representation of an object or process.
Scientific Theory Is a well tested explanation for a wide range of observations or experimental results.
Scientific Law A statement that describes what scientists expect to happen every time under a particular set of conditions.
Data Facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through observations.
