context clue | information in words and phrases surrounding an unfamiliar word that hint at the meaning of the unfamiliar word |
denotation | the exact, literal meaning of a word |
diction | a writer's or speaker's choice of words |
expository writing | writing that explains, clarifies, defines, or gives information |
prediction | a logical guess or assumption about something that has not yet happened |
rhetoric | the art of speaking or writing effectively |
summarize | to briefly restate the main ideas of a piece of writing |
syntax | the way words and phrases are arranged to make a complete sentence |
tone | a writer's or speaker's attitude toward a subject |
introduction | the paragraph that introduces the main idea of the essay |
hook | catches the reader's attention and makes the reader want to read on |
thesis statement | presents the central idea of an essay |
topic sentence | explains the main idea of a paragraph and states or explains points related to the thesis |
body paragraphs | support the thesis by giving specific reasons, facts, and examples in individual paragraphs |
conclusion | stresses the importance of the thesis statement and gives a sense of completeness and insight to the reader |
transitions | help the reader follow shifts in ideas, sentences, and paragraphs |
detail sentence | evidence (facts, statistics, examples) that supports the topic sentence |
commentary | explanation of the way the facts, details and /or examples in a paragraph or essay support the topic sentence |
metaphor | compares two unlike things without using the words "like" or "as" |
