ARE- BS - Lighting
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Luminous Intensity | Measure of the wavelength-weighted power emitted by a light source - measured in candelas |
Lumen | Measure of photometric power |
Illuminance | Measure of how much light illuminates a surface - measured in footcandles |
Retina | Distinguishes light colors into rods and cones |
Cornea | Responsible for controlling the amount of light needed by the eye |
Lens | Responsible to focusing objects that come into the eye |
Color Rendition Index | Refers to how closely colors appear to their intention based on the light source used - incandescent lamps are best for this |
Incandescent Lamp | Tungsten filament inside a gas-filled, sealed glass envelope. Low in cost but have low life-expectancy and good CRI. |
Tungsten Halogen Lamp | Longer life, lower lumen depreciation, and smaller envelope than a comparative incandescent fixture |
Fluorescent Lamp | Poor color rendition index, longer life than incandescent lamps, require ballast |
LED Lamp | High life expectancy, high initial cost, low life-cycle cost |
High-Pressure Sodium | Hard to distinguish colors, good for exterior applications, high life expectancy |
Indirect Lighting | System in which light output of the luminaires is directed towards the ceiling and upper walls of a room |
Efficacy | The efficiency of a lighting source in lumens/watt |
Lamp Lumen Depreciation | The deterioration of the lumen output of a lamp as it ages. |
Mercury Vapor | One of the HID lamp types. Require a warm-up period and are not great on the CRI. Initially developed for use with exterior lighting applications. |
Metal Halide | Developed to improve the mercury vapor lamp. Contain a quartz arc tube |
High-Pressure Sodium | Most efficient lamp. Poor with color rendering and require a warm-up period. |
Low-Pressure Sodium | Used in security applications due to poor color rendering |
