what is oxygen debt? | when the body is working hard meaning there is a requirement for more oxygen than they can get. resulting in an athletes panting/ breathing heavily in order to repay oxygen debt. |
what is the respiratory system? | 1) intercostal muscles contract and lift the chest upwards and outwards. 2) the diaphragm opens and lowers 3) nose and mouth 4) trachea 5) bronchi/ bronchioles 6) alveoli causing gaseous exchange |
tidal volume | the amount of air inspired and expired with each normal breath at rest or during exercise. |
vital capacity | the greatest amount of air that can be made to pass in and out of the lungs, normally this is between 4 and 5 litres. |
