What are the basic questions you might ask relating to labs? What are the normal ranges? What was the test ordered? What do the results mean? What if any prep is needed? When was the last set done? What should you teach the patient about labs? Do you need consent?
Analysis of labs Why are tests abnormal for patient? What do the labs mean for the patient? What signs and symptoms are related to results? Nursing interventions that are appropriate for the lab results?
What is important when communicating the results of labwork? Call physician with abnormal results? Inform instructor with abnormal test results. Critical values should be called to the physician.
What does CBC stand for? Complete Blood Count
What is a CBC composed of? wbc, rbc, Hgb, Hct, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW, platelets
What does MCV stand for and what is it normal range? Mean Corpuscular Volume. Normal range: 80-96
What does MCH stand for and what is it's normal range? Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin. Normal Range: 27.5-33.2
What types of disease processes is an abnormal MCV related to? B-12 deficiency, Folic Acid deficiency, and Pernicious Anemia
What type of disease processes is an abnormal MCH indicative of? Iron deficient anemia
What does MCHC stand for and what is it's normal range? Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration. Normal Range: 33.4-35.5
What type of disease processes is an abnormal MCHC indicative of? Iron deficient anemia
What does RDW stand for and what is it's normal range? RBC distribution width. Normal Range: 11.7-14.2
What is an abnormal RDW indicative of? Iron deficiency, pernicious anemia, Vit b-12 deficiency
What is the normal range for a total white count? 4.5-11
If the neutrophils are elevated in a CBC count what might this be idicative of? acute infection and inflammation
what is the normal range for neutrophils? 50-65
What do you call an inflammation/infectiton of the outer layer of the heart? pericarditis
If you patient is dehydrated what would you expect her blood pressure to do? elevate
