Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is the purpose of Health Level 7 (HL7)? | To facilitate communication in medical imaging. Combined with DICOM, it makes it possible to create, store, view, and access image, reports, and patient records on different types of equipment from different manufacturers. |
What is the function of the Radiology Information System (RIS) | The data system for patient-related functions, including scheduling, ordering, worklists, patient data, communication with PACS, reports, billing, and trending. |
What is the system universally adopted as the standard for medical image interchange. It was developed through collaboration between the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) | Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM) |
What is the term used that allows the computer to distinguish patient data. There is an accession number (order number) assigned to each imaging exam by the RIS. It is placed in the DICOM header of every image acquired. | Unique identifier |
This term describes computer-based storage of digital images which can be retrieved, viewed, and manipulated. It provides capabilities for magnification, windowing/leveling, and annotation. | Picture archiving and communications system (PACS) |
What are 2 examples of Local Area Network (LAN)? | HIS and RIS |
What are 2 examples of Wide Area Network (WAN)? | Teleradiology or the internet |
What are some of the advantages of a Wide Area Networks? | Cover larger areas and can operate commercially and publicly. |
What are some advantages of Local Area Networks? | Transfers data at higher rates and has secure communication lines. |
Describe teleradiology. | An extension of PACS that distributes digital images for off site interpretation. |
Define redundant array of independent disks (RAID). | This serves as a back-up if a drive fails so that images can be retrieved. |
Define Jukebox. | The largest device used by PACS. It consists of long-term storage. |
What does the term "prefetching" mean? | The automatic retrieval of images based on predefined protocols. For example a protocol might specify that the 2 most recent CXR should be prefetched for a patient scheduled for a CXR that day. |
This is where the radiologist interprets images. | Diagnostic workstation. |
