Nursing-BP

What is Blood Pressure? is the force or pressure that carries blood to all parts of the body. A blood pressure reading is the pressure that blood puts on the walls of arteries. Upper reading is systolic (sis-tall-ik) and the lower reading is the diastolic (di-uh-stall-ik)
Why do you need to take your blood pressure? to see if the patient is hemodynamically stable, it means that he/she has a stable heart pump and good circulation of blood
Why should you talk to the client? so that they will feel relaxed and in less stress
When not to take a BP reading? soon after smoking or having caffeine
Why must the patient be quiet during this process? to hear the sounds * speaking raises BP
If you cannot hear the sounds what to do? check your instrument * ask an RN for help
What should you do before taking a BP reading? Hand hygeine * consent * tell them what you are going to do * document
What should you do after taking a BP reading? clean the equipment
Diastole cannot hear anymore - ventricles are relaxing * fill with blood *
Systolic It measures the amount of pressure that blood exerts on arteries and vessels while the heart is beating * Left ventricles contract * empties out blood
