Circumnavigate Sail around the world.

Henry the Navigator Prince Henry of Portugal, was convinced that something lay to the west over the ocean. Gathered together the best astronomers and geographers to share their knowledge with Portugesse sailors and ship builders. Also they created new instruments that are
Gold Coast The Part of Africa that on the Atlantic Ocean. One of the first places to be searched by explorers. Called the Godl Coast because the people there traded gold and ivory for other European goods.
Bartholomeu Dias First person to go around the Cape of Good Hope. It's the southern tip of Afirca.
Vasco de Gama First person to go around the Cape of Good Hope and then even further to India.
Christopher Columbus Sponsered by Spain to travel west to get to India. Landed in the Caribbean. Thought it was India and called it the "West Indies." Given credit for discovering America.
Vikings Lead by Eric the Red and Leif Ericson, had traveled to Greenland and set up settlements in present day Newfoundland. All of this was before the European explorers set out.
King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella Supported Christopher Columbus on the condition that he spread Christianity in whatever new world he came to.
Caribbean Islands The part of the Western Hemisphere that Christopher Columbus is going to explore.
Amerigo Vespucci The map maker who traveled with other explorers around the coast and created the first map of the new World's coast. North and South America are nammed after him.
Ferdinand Magellan Frist European to circumnavigate the World. Died in the Phillippines, but his crew continued the journey and he is given credit for it.
Conquistadors Spanish explorers in the America's in the 1500's. Given permission to explore and settle America as long as the sent the country 1/5 of all the wealth they found.
Hernan Cortes Conquistador who explored and settled Mexico. Defeated the Aztecs with the help of their enemies.
Aztecs The Native American tribe that controled most of Mexico. Was defeated by Hernan Cortes with the help of their enemies. They made their enemies pay to high a tribute and also sacrificed many of them.
Francisco Pizarro Spanish conquistador that explored the area of present day Peru. Also conquered the Incas which was the ruling tribe in that area. Found much wealth for Spain.
Incas Conquered by Pizarro. Had ruled the area in the Andes Mountians. Lots of gold.
Juan Ponce de Leon Explored in Florida looking for the Fountain of Youth. His exploration is going to lead to more explorers searching there and the establishment of a permanent settlement of St. Augustine.
Nunez Cabeza de Vaca Had explored Florida the set sail across the gulf to Mexico. But storms came and he was blown of course to Texas. Then he and his remaining men started a 1,000 mile journey on foot to Mexico City. He explored many areas in the Southwest United States a
Hernando de Soto Went searching for the cities. Was the first European to cross the Mississippi River. Travled all around teh Southeast before he died in present day Oklahoma.
Northwest Passage Europeans believed that there had to be a way to get from Europe to China and India by going west. This was what they called the route. Many look, but there is none found.
John Cabot Sponsered by England, he landed on present day Newfoundland. England uses his exploration as its basis for claims in the new world.
Giovanni da Verrazano Sponsered by the Frech he traveled to Nova Scotia and down to the Carolinas. Use his voyage as the basis for its claims in the new world.
Jacques Cartier Sailed up the St. Lawrence River and establish the city of Montreal. First French settlement in the new world.
Henry Hudson English explorer who establish England claim in Canada around the Hudson Bay and parts west.
