prairie state therapuetic techniques

Giving recognition “I see you combed you hair” | Show recognition of client as a person or awareness of change. |
Offering self “I’ll sit with you” | Unconditional acceptance, nurse makes themselves available |
Giving Broad openings “ Is there something you want to talk about” | Allows the client to introduce topic for discussion |
Offering General leads “Go ON tell me about it” | Gives client encouragement to continue. Client guides discussion |
Placing the event in time or sequence “was this before or after” | Clarifies relationship of events in time |
Making observations “you appear tense I see you are biting your lip” | Verbalizing what is perceived and brings clients attention to something he isn’t aware of. |
Encouraging descriptions of perceptions “What does the voice seem to be saying” | Asking the client to verbalize what he perceives |
Restating ” I can not sleep” You have difficulty sleeping” | Repeating the main idea expressed and it is understood and they can continue |
Reflecting “ do you think I should tell the doctor” “Do you think you should” | Directing back to the client the questions feelings and ideas |
Focusing “ this point seems to be worth looking at more closely” | Concentrating on a single point, help to center clients thoughts |
Giving information “ My name is…” | Makes available the facts the clients need and builds trust |
Seeking Clarification “ I’m not sure I follow, What is your main point” | Seeking to make clear what is vague, Helps client clarify |
Seeking consensual validation “tell me if my understanding agrees with yours” | Searching for mutual understanding |
Verbalizing the implied “It is a waste of time to talk”” you think no one understands” | Voicing what the patient has hinted w/out being blunt |
Encouraging Evaluation “ what are your feelings in regard to” | discourages client from adopting ideas from others |
Summarizing “during the past hour we have talked about” | Organizes what has been said earlier brings awareness of progress made towards greater understanding |
