Rejecting “I don’t want to hear about it” shows contempt for behavior, stops explorations
Disapproving ”that’s bad” Judgmental implies client is expected to please the nurse.
Agreeing “that’s right I agree” gives the client ideas that he is right because he is agreeing with the nurse
Disagreeing “That’s wrong Implies the client is wrong
Advising “Why don’t you” Implies the nurse is all knowing and that he is incapable of self direction
Probing “Now tell me about____” makes client feel he is being used
Defending “The hospital has a fine reputation Protecting something make sthe client feel he has no right to criticize
Requesting an explanation ”why do you think that” Asking the client to provide a reason for his thought/feelings
Belittling “ I have nothing to live for” “ everyone feels bad sometime” Belittles the clients situation
Stereotyping “nice weather we are having” using meaningless trite expressions encourages the client to do the same
Using denial “I’m sick” your not sick” refusing to admit there is a problem
Interpreting “what you really trying to say” Seeking to make conscience that which is unconscious
