legislative branch | the branch of government having the power to make laws |
impeachment | when a majority of the members of the house of representatives accuse the president or other high government officials, such as a federal judge, of serous wrong doing |
approriations | to raise money |
speaker of the house | the presiding officer in the house of representatives |
bicameral | two house, as in a legislature with two houses |
vice president | an official or executive ranking below and deputizing for a president |
standing committee | a permanent committee that meets regularly |
majority party | the political group in a legislative body with the most voting members |
redistricting | divide or organize (an area) into new political or school districts |
re-apportionment | the redistribution of representation in a legislative body |
president pro tempore | a high-ranking senator of the majority party who presides over the US Senate in the absence of the vice president |
filibuster | an action such as a prolonged speech that obstructs progress in a legislative assembly while not technically contravening the required procedures |
constituents | being a voting member of a community or organization and having the power to appoint or elect |
cesus | an official count or survey of a population, typically recording various details of individuals |
conference committee | a committee made up of members from both houses whose task is to eliminate any differences between versions of legislation on the same subject passed in the different chambers |
joint session | a joint meeting, as of both houses of a bicameral legislature |
implied powers | a power that is not specifically authorized in writing, but is assumed because of similar powers which have already been granted in writing |
minority party | A majority party is the political group in a legislative body with the most voting members |
lobbyist | a person who takes part in an organized attempt to influence legislators |
checks and balances | a system that allows each branch of a government to amend or veto acts of another branch so as to prevent any one branch from exerting too much power |
interest groups | a group of persons having a common identifying interest that often provides a basis for action |
cloture | (in a legislative assembly) a procedure for ending a debate and taking a vote |
bill | a draft of a proposed law presented to parliament for discussion |
expulsion | the action of depriving someone of membership in an organization |
