Cabamazepine complications (1) | CNS effects: nystagmus, double vision, vertigo, staggering gait, headache (subside in a few weeks). RN cons: low doses initially, then increase dosage. avoid driving & other activities that require alertness @ beginning of treatment. adm. @ bedtime. |
carbamazepine complications (2) | blood dyscrasias, teratogenesis, hypo-osmolality, skin disorders; report Stevens-Johnson syndrome, hepatotoxicity don't give to children less than 2 years old, |
carbamazepine interactions | concurrent w/oral contraceptives, warfarin decrease the effects of these meds. use alternate form of birth contl. grapefruit juice increases carbamazepine levels. avoid grapefruit juice. phenytoin & phenobarbital decrease the effects of carbamazepine. |
