Outcomes Research research that assesses and documents the effectiveness of health care services
Research systematic inquiry that uses disciplined methods to answer questions or solve problems.
Nursing Research research designed to develop evidence about issues of importance to nurses (nursing practice, nursing education, nursing administration)
Evidence Based Practice (EBP) Use of best clinical evidence in making patient care decisions.
Replications repeating of studies with different clients, in different clinical settings and at different times to ensure that findings are robust.
Integrative Reviews amass comprehensive research information on a topic, weigh pieces of evidence, and use integrated info to draw conclusions about the state of knowledge.
Evidence based on Tradition and Authority Practices that are based on custom or because it came from someone with authority.
Evidence based on Clinical Experience and Intuition Practices that are based on the nurse's personal experiences or gut feelings.
Evidence based on Trial and Error Practices based on successively trying out alternative solutions.
Evidence based on Assembled Information Practices that are based on scholarly information, but do not guarantee better pt outcomes.
Evidence based on Disciplined Research Practiced based on research conducted within a disciplined format.
Positivist/Postpositivist Paradigm A paradigm that emphasizes the rational and specific. Much research is aimed at understanding underlying causes of phenomena.
Determinism A positivist's belief that the phenomena are not haphazard or random, but rather have antecedent causes.
Naturalistic Paradigm A paradigm that represents a major alternative system for conducting disciplined inquiry, findings in these studies are the product of interaction btwn the inquirer and the participants.
Quantitative Research Closely allied with positivist paradigm; Uses the scientific method, gathers empirical evidence.
Qualitative Research Closely allied with Naturalistic paradigm;Investigations emphasize understanding the human experience as it is lived.
Identification and Description A purpose of Nursing research; Identification of the phenomena (QL) & description of attributes and importance of the phenomena (QN+QL).
Exploration A purpose of Nursing research; investigates the phenomenon and factors to which it is related.
Explanation A purpose of Nursing research; goal is to understand the underpinnings of natural phenomena and to explain systematic relationships among phenomena.
Prediction and Control A purpose of Nursing research; Possible to predict and control phenomena based on research findings, even without complete understanding.
