Research Chapter 1
Week 1
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Outcomes Research | research that assesses and documents the effectiveness of health care services |
Research | systematic inquiry that uses disciplined methods to answer questions or solve problems. |
Nursing Research | research designed to develop evidence about issues of importance to nurses (nursing practice, nursing education, nursing administration) |
Evidence Based Practice (EBP) | Use of best clinical evidence in making patient care decisions. |
Replications | repeating of studies with different clients, in different clinical settings and at different times to ensure that findings are robust. |
Integrative Reviews | amass comprehensive research information on a topic, weigh pieces of evidence, and use integrated info to draw conclusions about the state of knowledge. |
Evidence based on Tradition and Authority | Practices that are based on custom or because it came from someone with authority. |
Evidence based on Clinical Experience and Intuition | Practices that are based on the nurse's personal experiences or gut feelings. |
Evidence based on Trial and Error | Practices based on successively trying out alternative solutions. |
Evidence based on Assembled Information | Practices that are based on scholarly information, but do not guarantee better pt outcomes. |
Evidence based on Disciplined Research | Practiced based on research conducted within a disciplined format. |
Positivist/Postpositivist Paradigm | A paradigm that emphasizes the rational and specific. Much research is aimed at understanding underlying causes of phenomena. |
Determinism | A positivist's belief that the phenomena are not haphazard or random, but rather have antecedent causes. |
Naturalistic Paradigm | A paradigm that represents a major alternative system for conducting disciplined inquiry, findings in these studies are the product of interaction btwn the inquirer and the participants. |
Quantitative Research | Closely allied with positivist paradigm; Uses the scientific method, gathers empirical evidence. |
Qualitative Research | Closely allied with Naturalistic paradigm;Investigations emphasize understanding the human experience as it is lived. |
Identification and Description | A purpose of Nursing research; Identification of the phenomena (QL) & description of attributes and importance of the phenomena (QN+QL). |
Exploration | A purpose of Nursing research; investigates the phenomenon and factors to which it is related. |
Explanation | A purpose of Nursing research; goal is to understand the underpinnings of natural phenomena and to explain systematic relationships among phenomena. |
Prediction and Control | A purpose of Nursing research; Possible to predict and control phenomena based on research findings, even without complete understanding. |
