Heart Chapter 13

TermDefinition
Anemia Inadequate number of red blood cells, hemoglobin, or both.
Aneurysm Ballooning out of , or sac like formation on an artery wall.
Arteriosclerosis Hardening or thickening of the arterial walls, resulting in a loss of elasticity and contractility.
Atherosclerosis occurs when fatty plaques (frequently cholesterol) are deposited on the walls of the arteries.
Congestive heart failure a condition that occurs when the heart muscles do not beat adequately to supply the blood needs of the body.
Embolus a foreign substance circulating in the blood stream.
Hemophilia an inherited disease that occurs almost exclusively in male individuals but can be carried by female individuals.
Hypertension high blood pressure
Leukemia a malignant disease of the bone marrow or lymph tissue.
Myocardial Infarction Heart attack, occurs when a blockage in the coronary arteries cuts off the supply of blood to the heart .
Phlebitis an inflammation of a vein, frequently in the leg.
Thrombus a clot
Varicose veins dilated , swollen veins that have lost elasticity and cause stasis, or decreased blood flow.
Angina pectoris severe crushing pain
Arrhythmia any change or deviation from the normal heart rythym.
Bradycardia slow heart rate, less than 60 beats per minute.
Tachycardia rapid heart rate, more than 100 beats per minute.
Murmurs gurgling of hissing sound that can indicate some type of defect in the valves of the heart.
mitral valve prolapse the valves between the left atrium and the left ventricle do not close perfectly.
