French and Indian War Began with the Ohio River Valley. "Spread" into the Seven Years War. Began as an undeclared war. Britain, colonists, and some Indians vs. French and Indians
Huguenots Protestant. St. Bartholomew's Day (1575) tenthousand Huguenots slaughtered. Edict of Nantes granted limited religious tolerance. Denied refugee in New France. Refugee in Louisiana, SC, and Ohio River Valley
Samuel de Champlain "Father of New France" Soldier and explorer. Strong relations with Indians. Fought w/ Huron Indians against Iroquois. Fell under control of the king.
George Washington (1754) Sent to Ohio as a lieutenant colonel in command of 150 militiamen. Secure claim to upper VA-Expansion of colonies from French/Spanish/other colonies. Fort Necessity. 10 hour siege against French, forced to surrender his entired command.
Albany Congress 1754-7 delegates showed. Ben Franklin-additional colonial unity wanted, disunity means no threat. Colonists-unity. British-relations b/w colonists & Iroquois. Important milestone in colonial unity
Seven Year's War Spread from French and Indian War according to Britain. Britain and Prussia vs. France, Spain, Austria and Russia. Greater colonial unity
"Join or Die" Benjamin Franklin. Disjointed snake representing the colonies.
Braddock's Defeat European warfare experienced general. Disapproved of the way the colonists fought. Drug heavy artillery and moved slowly clearing the dense forest. Came upon a smaller French and Indian army who scattered and ambushed. Ends myth of British invincibility
William Pitt British leader "Great Commoner" b/c he drew strength from common people. "Organizer of victory" concentrated on vitals of Canada(Quebec-Montreal). New, energetic leaders for military
Treaty of Paris French power no more in North America. France retained several small sugar islands in West Indies. Ceded to Spain all trans-Mississippi, Louisiana & outlets of New Oreleans lands. Spain turned FL to Britian for Cuba
1763 Pontiac's War Indians attacked Detroit and overran all but 3 British posts near Appalachians. Retaliation: blankets infected with small pox given to Indians. Showed the need to stabilize relations with Indians
Proclamation of 1763 Prohibited settlement in the area beyond the Appalachians. Colonists angered, despited this not meant to surpress colonists.
